This has been a tough year for Sri Lankan cricket, particularly in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The team was whitewashed in South Africa 5-0 and then squared a home series against Bangladesh 1-1. Much of their struggles were attributed to the absence of senior players like Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga, who were injured. But even after their return, the struggles continued as they were knocked out of Champions Trophy without reaching the semi-finals. But the worst was when they suffered a first ever home defeat to 11th ranked Zimbabwe in the opening game of the five-match series in Galle.
They have done well since the shock defeat in the first game, squaring the series with a comfortable seven-wicket win in Galle and then were involved in their highest successful run chase at home in Suriyawewa, Hambantota, to take the lead in the series. Victory on Saturday in the fourth game will give them the series, the first in ODI cricket this year.
As for Zimbabwe, they promised so much at the start, but the wheels came off subsequently. A batting collapse in Galle saw them being shot out for 155 in the second game while the bowlers failed to defend 310 in the third game. Dropped catches and a missed stumping proved decisive as Sri Lanka took the lead at Suriyawewa.
Form Guide
Sri Lanka's openers recorded their maiden ODI centuries and added 229 runs for the first wicket at Suriyawewa. Upul Tharanga then smashed 44 in 32 balls to seal the win occupying his new number four position. Tharanga was brought back to the side last year due to his experience and has done really well. He was promoted as vice-captain this year and has averaged 62 in 12 games.
The big hitting Solomon Mire set up Zimbabwe's win in Galle with his maiden century, but since then, he has struggled as Nuwan Pradeep has dismissed him cheaply bowling with accuracy and not providing much width.
When: Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe, 4th ODI, on July 8, 4:15 AM GMT, 9:45 AM local time
Where: Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota
What to expect: If the pitch for the third ODI was anything to go by, it should be yet another high scoring encounter with little in it for any kind of bowler.
Team News
The good news for Mire is that Pradeep has been ruled out of the fourth ODI due to a stiff thigh. He bowled only six overs in the third ODI and returned to the dressing room for treatment. Sri Lanka were confident that he will recover in time for the game, but didn't want to risk him with a big series against India around the corner. Sri Lanka have added seamer Asitha Fernando to their squad.
As for Zimbabwe, Ryan Burl, who was hospitalized on the eve of the third ODI due to an allergic reaction is available for selection. Fast bowler, Carl Mumba, who hurt his knee during the game will go through a fitness test before the game.
Stats
This year Sri Lanka have played 14 ODIs and won only four. Fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who has struggled all series needs four more wickets to become the fourth Sri Lankan to complete 300 ODI wickets.
Quotes:
"It's been a tough year for us no doubt. So it's very important to win this series. I don't want any complacency creeping in and will be reminding everyone that we need to finish off the series," - Angelo Mathews.
"Disappointed that we scored 310 and couldn't defend in the last game. On the bowling side we need to bowl better. I thought we bowled both sides of the wicket," - Graeme Cremer.Teams:Zimbabwe (From): Hamilton Masakadza, Solomon Mire, Tarisai Musakanda, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, Malcolm Waller, Sikandar Raza, Peter Moor(w), Graeme Cremer(c), Carl Mumba, Tendai Chatara, Chris Mpofu, Donald Tiripano, Nathan Waller, Wellington Masakadza, Richard Ngarava, Chamu Chibhabha, Ryan Burl, Regis ChakabvaSri Lanka (From): Niroshan Dickwella(w), Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Upul Tharanga, Angelo Mathews(c), Asela Gunaratne, Wanidu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Lakshan Sandakan, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Pradeep, Amila Aponso, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lahiru Kumara, Chamara Kapugedera, Akila Dananjaya, Lahiru Madushanka
